           andwhenIhadgoneaboutfour-leaguestothenorthward,thewindbeingatsouth-east,atsixintheeveningIdescriedasmallisland,abouthalfaleaguetothenorth-west.Iadvancedforward,andcastanchoronthelee-sideoftheisland,whichseemedtobeuninhabited.Ithentooksomerefreshment,andwenttomyrest.Isleptwell,andasIconjecturedatleastsixhours,forIfoundthedaybrokeintwohoursafterIawaked.Itwasaclearnight.Iatemybreakfastbeforethesunwasup;andheavinganchor,thewindbeingfavourable,IsteeredthesamecoursethatIhaddonethedaybefore,whereinIwasdirectedbymypocketcompass.Myintentionwastoreach,ifpossible,oneofthoseislands.whichIhadreasontobelievelaytothenorth-eastofVanDiemen’sLand.Idiscoverednothingallthatday;butuponthenext,aboutthreeintheafternoon,whenIhadbymycomputationmadetwenty-fourleaguesfromBlefuscu,Idescriedasailsteeringtothesouth-east;mycoursewasdueeast.Ihailedher,butcouldgetnoanswer;yetIfoundIgaineduponher,forthewindslackened.ImadeallthesailIcould,andinhalfanhourshespiedme,thenhungoutherancient,anddischargedagun.ItisnoteasytoexpressthejoyIwasin,upontheunexpectedhopeofoncemoreseeingmybelovedcountry,andthedearpledgesIleftinit.Theshipslackenedhersails,andIcameupwithherbetweenfiveandsixintheevening,September26th;butmyheartleapedwithinmetoseeherEnglishcolours.Iputmycowsandsheepintomycoat-pockets,andgotonboardwithallmylittlecargoofprovisions.ThevesselwasanEnglishmerchantman,returningfromJapanbytheNorthandSouthseas;thecaptain,Mr.JohnBiddel,ofDeptford,averycivilman,andanexcellentsailor.

           Wewerenowinthelatitudeof30degreessouth;therewereaboutfiftymenintheship;andhereImetanoldcomradeofmine,onePeterWilliams,whogavemeagoodcharactertothecaptain.
