           "Intheseveraldebatesuponthisimpeachment,itmustbeconfessedthathismajestygavemanymarksofhisgreatlenity;oftenurgingtheservicesyouhaddonehim,andendeavouringtoextenuateyourcrimes.Thetreasurerandadmiralinsistedthatyoushouldbeputtothemostpainfulandignominiousdeath,bysettingfiretoyourhouseatnight,andthegeneralwastoattendwithtwentythousandmen,armedwithpoisonedarrows,toshootyouonthefaceandhands.Someofyourservantsweretohaveprivateorderstostrewapoisonousjuiceonyourshirtsandsheets,whichwouldsoonmakeyoutearyourownflesh,anddieintheutmosttorture.Thegeneralcameintothesameopinion;sothatforalongtimetherewasamajorityagainstyou;buthismajestyresolving,ifpossible,tospareyourlife,atlastbroughtoffthechamberlain.

           "Uponthisincident,Reldresal,principalsecretaryforprivateaffairs,whoalwaysapprovedhimselfyourtruefriend,wascommandedbytheemperortodeliverhisopinion,whichheaccordinglydid;andthereinjustifiedthegoodthoughtsyouhaveofhim.Heallowedyourcrimestobegreat,butthatstilltherewasroomformercy,themostcommendablevirtueinaprince,andforwhichhismajestywassojustlycelebrated.Hesaid,thefriendshipbetweenyouandhimwassowellknowntotheworld,thatperhapsthemosthonourableboardmightthinkhimpartial;however,inobediencetothecommandhehadreceived,hewouldfreelyofferhissentiments.Thatifhismajesty,inconsiderationofyourservices,andpursuanttohisownmercifuldisposition,wouldpleasetospareyourlife,andonlygiveorderstoputoutbothyoureyes,hehumblyconceived,thatbythisexpedientjusticemightinsomemeasurebesatisfied,andalltheworldwouldapplaudthelenityoftheemperor,aswellasthefairandgenerousproceedingsofthosewhohavethehonourtobehiscounsellors.
