Theyoungcouplemeet,andarejoined,merelybecauseitisthedeterminationoftheirparentsandfriends;itiswhattheyseedoneeveryday,andtheylookuponitasoneofthenecessaryactionsofareasonablebeing.Buttheviolationofmarriage,oranyotherunchastity,wasneverheardof;andthemarriedpairpasstheirliveswiththesamefriendshipandmutualbenevolence,thattheybeartoallothersofthesamespecieswhocomeintheirway,withoutjealousy,fondness,quarrelling,ordiscontent.
Ineducatingtheyouthofbothsexes,theirmethodisadmirable,andhighlydeservesourimitation.Thesearenotsufferedtotasteagrainofoats,exceptuponcertaindays,tilleighteenyearsold;normilk,butveryrarely;andinsummertheygrazetwohoursinthemorning,andasmanyintheevening,whichtheirparentslikewiseobserve;buttheservantsarenotallowedabovehalfthattime,andagreatpartoftheirgrassisbroughthome,whichtheyeatatthemostconvenienthours,whentheycanbebestsparedfromwork.
Temperance,industry,exercise,andcleanliness,arethelessonsequallyenjoinedtotheyoungonesofbothsexes:andmymasterthoughtitmonstrousinus,togivethefemalesadifferentkindofeducationfromthemales,exceptinsomearticlesofdomesticmanagement;whereby,ashetrulyobserved,onehalfofournativesweregoodfornothingbutbringingchildrenintotheworld;andtotrustthecareofourchildrentosuchuselessanimals,hesaid,wasyetagreaterinstanceofbrutality
