Twodaysafterthisadventure,theemperor,havingorderedthatpartofhisarmywhichquartersinandabouthismetropolis,tobeinreadiness,tookafancyofdivertinghimselfinaverysingularmanner.HedesiredIwouldstandlikeaColossus,withmylegsasfarasunderasIconvenientlycould.Hethencommandedhisgeneral(whowasanoldexperiencedleader,andagreatpatronofmine)todrawupthetroopsincloseorder,andmarchthemunderme;thefootbytwenty-fourabreast,andthehorsebysixteen,withdrumsbeating,coloursflying,andpikesadvanced.Thisbodyconsistedofthreethousandfoot,andathousandhorse.Hismajestygaveorders,uponpainofdeath,thateverysoldierinhismarchshouldobservethestrictestdecencywithregardtomyperson;whichhowevercouldnotpreventsomeoftheyoungerofficersfromturninguptheireyesastheypassedunderme:and,toconfessthetruth,mybreecheswereatthattimeinsoillacondition,thattheyaffordedsomeopportunitiesforlaughterandadmiration.
