AtlastIbeheldseveralanimalsinafield,andoneortwoofthesamekindsittingintrees.Theirshapewasverysingularanddeformed,whichalittlediscomposedme,sothatIlaydownbehindathickettoobservethembetter.SomeofthemcomingforwardneartheplacewhereIlay,gavemeanopportunityofdistinctlymarkingtheirform.Theirheadsandbreastswerecoveredwithathickhair,somefrizzled,andotherslank;theyhadbeardslikegoats,andalongridgeofhairdowntheirbacks,andtheforepartsoftheirlegsandfeet;buttherestoftheirbodieswasbare,sothatImightseetheirskins,whichwereofabrownbuffcolour.Theyhadnotails,noranyhairatallontheirbuttocks,exceptabouttheanus,which,Ipresume,naturehadplacedtheretodefendthemastheysatontheground,forthisposturetheyused,aswellaslyingdown,andoftenstoodontheirhindfeet.Theyclimbedhightreesasnimblyasasquirrel,fortheyhadstrongextendedclawsbeforeandbehind,terminatinginsharppoints,andhooked.Theywouldoftenspring,andbound,andleap,withprodigiousagility.Thefemaleswerenotsolargeasthemales;theyhadlonglankhairontheirheads,butnoneontheirfaces,noranythingmorethanasortofdownontherestoftheirbodies,exceptabouttheanusandpudenda.Thedugshungbetweentheirforefeet,andoftenreachedalmosttothegroundastheywalked.Thehairofbothsexeswasofseveralcolours,brown,red,black,andyellow.
