Afterthispreface,hegavemeaparticularaccountofthestruldbrugsamongthem.Hesaid,"theycommonlyactedlikemortalstillaboutthirtyyearsold;afterwhich,bydegrees,theygrewmelancholyanddejected,increasinginbothtilltheycametofourscore.Thishelearnedfromtheirownconfession:forotherwise,therenotbeingabovetwoorthreeofthatspeciesborninanage,theyweretoofewtoformageneralobservationby.Whentheycametofourscoreyears,whichisreckonedtheextremityoflivinginthiscountry,theyhadnotonlyallthefolliesandinfirmitiesofotheroldmen,butmanymorewhicharosefromthedreadfulprospectofneverdying.Theywerenotonlyopinionative,peevish,covetous,morose,vain,talkative,butincapableoffriendship,anddeadtoallnaturalaffection,whichneverdescendedbelowtheirgrandchildren.Envyandimpotentdesiresaretheirprevailingpassions.Butthoseobjectsagainstwhichtheirenvyseemsprincipallydirected,arethevicesoftheyoungersortandthedeathsoftheold.
