Iwouldentertainmyselfinforminganddirectingthemindsofhopefulyoungmen,byconvincingthem,frommyownremembrance,experience,andobservation,fortifiedbynumerousexamples,oftheusefulnessofvirtueinpublicandprivatelife.Butmychoiceandconstantcompanionsshouldbeasetofmyownimmortalbrotherhood;amongwhom,Iwouldelectadozenfromthemostancient,downtomyowncontemporaries.Whereanyofthesewantedfortunes,Iwouldprovidethemwithconvenientlodgesroundmyownestate,andhavesomeofthemalwaysatmytable;onlyminglingafewofthemostvaluableamongyoumortals,whomlengthoftimewouldhardenmetolosewithlittleornoreluctance,andtreatyourposterityafterthesamemanner;justasamandivertshimselfwiththeannualsuccessionofpinksandtulipsinhisgarden,withoutregrettingthelossofthosewhichwitheredtheprecedingyear.
"ThesestruldbrugsandIwouldmutuallycommunicateourobservationsandmemorials,throughthecourseoftime;remarktheseveralgradationsbywhichcorruptionstealsintotheworld,andopposeitineverystep,bygivingperpetualwarningandinstructiontomankind;which,addedtothestronginfluenceofourownexample,wouldprobablypreventthatcontinualdegeneracyofhumannaturesojustlycomplainedofinallages.
