           Intheleftpocket,anotherengineofthesamekind.Inthesmallerpocketontherightside,wereseveralroundflatpiecesofwhiteandredmetal,ofdifferentbulk;someofthewhite,whichseemedtobesilver,weresolargeandheavy,thatmycomradeandIcouldhardlyliftthem.Intheleftpocketweretwoblackpillarsirregularlyshaped:wecouldnot,withoutdifficulty,reachthetopofthem,aswestoodatthebottomofhispocket.Oneofthemwascovered,andseemedallofapiece:butattheupperendoftheotherthereappearedawhiteroundsubstance,abouttwicethebignessofourheads.Withineachofthesewasenclosedaprodigiousplateofsteel;which,byourorders,weobligedhimtoshowus,becauseweapprehendedtheymightbedangerousengines.Hetookthemoutoftheircases,andtoldus,thatinhisowncountryhispracticewastoshavehisbeardwithoneofthese,andcuthismeatwiththeother.Thereweretwopocketswhichwecouldnotenter:thesehecalledhisfobs;theyweretwolargeslitscutintothetopofhismiddlecover,butsqueezedclosebythepressureofhisbelly.Outoftherightfobhungagreatsilverchain,withawonderfulkindofengineatthebottom.Wedirectedhimtodrawoutwhateverwasattheendofthatchain;whichappearedtobeaglobe,halfsilver,andhalfofsometransparentmetal;for,onthetransparentside,wesawcertainstrangefigurescircularlydrawn,andthoughtwecouldtouchthem,tillwefoundourfingersstoppedbythelucidsubstance.Heputthisengineintoourears,whichmadeanincessantnoise,likethatofawater-mill:andweconjectureitiseithersomeunknownanimal,orthegodthatheworships;butwearemoreinclinedtothelatteropinion,becauseheassuredus,(ifweunderstoodhimright,forheexpressedhimselfveryimperfectly)thatheseldomdidanythingwithoutconsultingit.
