For,althoughtheirlargesttelescopesdonotexceedthreefeet,theymagnifymuchmorethanthoseofahundredwithus,andshowthestarswithgreaterclearness.ThisadvantagehasenabledthemtoextendtheirdiscoveriesmuchfurtherthanourastronomersinEurope;fortheyhavemadeacatalogueoftenthousandfixedstars,whereasthelargestofoursdonotcontainaboveonethirdpartofthatnumber.Theyhavelikewisediscoveredtwolesserstars,orsatellites,whichrevolveaboutMars;whereoftheinnermostisdistantfromthecentreoftheprimaryplanetexactlythreeofhisdiameters,andtheoutermost,five;theformerrevolvesinthespaceoftenhours,andthelatterintwenty-oneandahalf;sothatthesquaresoftheirperiodicaltimesareverynearinthesameproportionwiththecubesoftheirdistancefromthecentreofMars;whichevidentlyshowsthemtobegovernedbythesamelawofgravitationthatinfluencestheotherheavenlybodies.
Theyhaveobservedninety-threedifferentcomets,andsettledtheirperiodswithgreatexactness.Ifthisbetrue(andtheyaffirmitwithgreatconfidence)itismuchtobewished,thattheirobservationsweremadepublic,wherebythetheoryofcomets,whichatpresentisverylameanddefective,mightbebroughttothesameperfectionwithotherartsofastronomy.
