Bythisobliquemotion,theislandisconveyedtodifferentpartsofthemonarch’sdominions.Toexplainthemannerofitsprogress,letABrepresentalinedrawnacrossthedominionsofBalnibarbi,letthelinecdrepresenttheloadstone,ofwhichletdbetherepellingend,andctheattractingend,theislandbeingoverC:letthestonebeplacedinpositioncd,withitsrepellingenddownwards;thentheislandwillbedrivenupwardsobliquelytowardsD.WhenitisarrivedatD,letthestonebeturneduponitsaxle,tillitsattractingendpointstowardsE,andthentheislandwillbecarriedobliquelytowardsE;where,ifthestonebeagainturneduponitsaxletillitstandsinthepositionEF,withitsrepellingpointdownwards,theislandwillriseobliquelytowardsF,where,bydirectingtheattractingendtowardsG,theislandmaybecarriedtoG,andfromGtoH,byturningthestone,soastomakeitsrepellingextremitytopointdirectlydownward.
