           TheknowledgeIhadinmathematics,gavemegreatassistanceinacquiringtheirphraseology,whichdependedmuchuponthatscience,andmusic;andinthelatterIwasnotunskilled.Theirideasareperpetuallyconversantinlinesandfigures.Iftheywould,forexample,praisethebeautyofawoman,oranyotheranimal,theydescribeitbyrhombs,circles,parallelograms,ellipses,andothergeometricalterms,orbywordsofartdrawnfrommusic,needlessheretorepeat.Iobservedintheking’skitchenallsortsofmathematicalandmusicalinstruments,afterthefiguresofwhichtheycutupthejointsthatwereservedtohismajesty’stable.

           Theirhousesareveryillbuilt,thewallsbevil,withoutonerightangleinanyapartment;andthisdefectarisesfromthecontempttheybeartopracticalgeometry,whichtheydespiseasvulgarandmechanic;thoseinstructionstheygivebeingtoorefinedfortheintellectsoftheirworkmen,whichoccasionsperpetualmistakes.Andalthoughtheyaredexterousenoughuponapieceofpaper,inthemanagementoftherule,thepencil,andthedivider,yetinthecommonactionsandbehaviouroflife,Ihavenotseenamoreclumsy,awkward,andunhandypeople,norsoslowandperplexedintheirconceptionsuponallothersubjects,exceptthoseofmathematicsandmusic.
