TowardsnightIgotwithsomedifficultyintomyhouse,whereIlayontheground,andcontinuedtodosoaboutafortnight;duringwhichtime,theemperorgaveorderstohaveabedpreparedforme.Sixhundredbedsofthecommonmeasurewerebroughtincarriages,andworkedupinmyhouse;ahundredandfiftyoftheirbeds,sewntogether,madeupthebreadthandlength;andthesewerefourdouble:which,however,keptmebutveryindifferentlyfromthehardnessofthefloor,thatwasofsmoothstone.Bythesamecomputation,theyprovidedmewithsheets,blankets,andcoverlets,tolerableenoughforonewhohadbeensolonginuredtohardships.
Asthenewsofmyarrivalspreadthroughthekingdom,itbroughtprodigiousnumbersofrich,idle,andcuriouspeopletoseeme;sothatthevillageswerealmostemptied;andgreatneglectoftillageandhouseholdaffairsmusthaveensued,ifhisimperialmajestyhadnotprovided,byseveralproclamationsandordersofstate,againstthisinconveniency.Hedirectedthatthosewhohadalreadybeheldmeshouldreturnhome,andnotpresumetocomewithinfiftyyardsofmyhouse,withoutlicensefromthecourt;wherebythesecretariesofstategotconsiderablefees.
