           Itookoutmysmallprovisionsandafterhavingrefreshedmyself,Isecuredtheremainderinacave,whereofthereweregreatnumbers;Igatheredplentyofeggsupontherocks,andgotaquantityofdrysea-weed,andparchedgrass,whichIdesignedtokindlethenextday,androastmyeggsaswellasIcould,forIhadaboutmemyflint,steel,match,andburning-glass.IlayallnightinthecavewhereIhadlodgedmyprovisions.Mybedwasthesamedrygrassandsea-weedwhichIintendedforfuel.Isleptverylittle,forthedisquietsofmymindprevailedovermyweariness,andkeptmeawake.Iconsideredhowimpossibleitwastopreservemylifeinsodesolateaplace,andhowmiserablemyendmustbe:yetfoundmyselfsolistlessanddesponding,thatIhadnotthehearttorise;andbeforeIcouldgetspiritsenoughtocreepoutofmycave,thedaywasfaradvanced.Iwalkedawhileamongtherocks:theskywasperfectlyclear,andthesunsohot,thatIwasforcedtoturnmyfacefromit:whenallonasuddenitbecameobscure,asIthought,inamannerverydifferentfromwhathappensbytheinterpositionofacloud.Iturnedback,andperceivedavastopaquebodybetweenmeandthesunmovingforwardstowardstheisland:itseemedtobeabouttwomileshigh,andhidthesunsixorsevenminutes;butIdidnotobservetheairtobemuchcolder,ortheskymoredarkened,thanifIhadstoodundertheshadeofamountain.
