ThelargestofthetwopirateshipswascommandedbyaJapanesecaptain,whospokealittleDutch,butveryimperfectly.Hecameuptome,andafterseveralquestions,whichIansweredingreathumility,hesaid,"weshouldnotdie."Imadethecaptainaverylowbow,andthen,turningtotheDutchman,said,"Iwassorrytofindmoremercyinaheathen,thaninabrotherchristian."ButIhadsoonreasontorepentthosefoolishwords:forthatmaliciousreprobate,havingoftenendeavouredinvaintopersuadeboththecaptainsthatImightbethrownintothesea(whichtheywouldnotyieldto,afterthepromisemademethatIshouldnotdie),however,prevailedsofar,astohaveapunishmentinflictedonme,worse,inallhumanappearance,thandeathitself.Mymenweresentbyanequaldivisionintoboththepirateships,andmysloopnewmanned.Astomyself,itwasdeterminedthatIshouldbesetadriftinasmallcanoe,withpaddlesandasail,andfourdays’provisions;whichlast,theJapanesecaptainwassokindtodoubleoutofhisownstores,andwouldpermitnomantosearchme.
