           Thelearningofthispeopleisverydefective,consistingonlyinmorality,history,poetry,andmathematics,whereintheymustbeallowedtoexcel.Butthelastoftheseiswhollyappliedtowhatmaybeusefulinlife,totheimprovementofagriculture,andallmechanicalarts;sothatamongus,itwouldbelittleesteemed.Andastoideas,entities,abstractions,andtranscendentals,Icouldneverdrivetheleastconceptionintotheirheads.

           Nolawinthatcountrymustexceedinwordsthenumberoflettersintheiralphabet,whichconsistsonlyoftwoandtwenty.Butindeedfewofthemextendeventothatlength.Theyareexpressedinthemostplainandsimpleterms,whereinthosepeoplearenotmercurialenoughtodiscoveraboveoneinterpretation:andtowriteacommentuponanylaw,isacapitalcrime.Astothedecisionofcivilcauses,orproceedingsagainstcriminals,theirprecedentsaresofew,thattheyhavelittlereasontoboastofanyextraordinaryskillineither.
