Oneday,ayounggentleman,whowasnephewtomynurse’sgoverness,cameandpressedthembothtoseeanexecution.Itwasofaman,whohadmurderedoneofthatgentleman’sintimateacquaintance.Glumdalclitchwasprevailedontobeofthecompany,verymuchagainstherinclination,forshewasnaturallytender-hearted:and,asformyself,althoughIabhorredsuchkindofspectacles,yetmycuriositytemptedmetoseesomethingthatIthoughtmustbeextraordinary.Themalefactorwasfixedinachairuponascaffolderectedforthatpurpose,andhisheadcutoffatoneblow,withaswordofaboutfortyfeetlong.Theveinsandarteriesspoutedupsuchaprodigiousquantityofblood,andsohighintheair,thatthegreatjetd’eauatVersailleswasnotequaltoitforthetimeitlasted:andthehead,whenitfellonthescaffoldfloor,gavesuchabounceasmademestart,althoughIwasatleasthalfanEnglishmiledistant.
Thequeen,whooftenusedtohearmetalkofmysea-voyages,andtookalloccasionstodivertmewhenIwasmelancholy,askedmewhetherIunderstoodhowtohandleasailoranoar,andwhetheralittleexerciseofrowingmightnotbeconvenientformyhealth?Ianswered,thatIunderstoodbothverywell:foralthoughmyproperemploymenthadbeentobesurgeonordoctortotheship,yetoften,uponapinch,Iwasforcedtoworklikeacommonmariner.ButIcouldnotseehowthiscouldbedoneintheircountry,wherethesmallestwherrywasequaltoafirst-ratemanofwaramongus;andsuchaboatasIcouldmanagewouldneverliveinanyoftheirrivers.
