           Onedaythegovernessorderedourcoachmantostopatseveralshops,wherethebeggars,watchingtheiropportunity,crowdedtothesidesofthecoach,andgavemethemosthorriblespectaclethateveraEuropeaneyebeheld.Therewasawomanwithacancerinherbreast,swelledtoamonstroussize,fullofholes,intwoorthreeofwhichIcouldhaveeasilycrept,andcoveredmywholebody.Therewasafellowwithaweninhisneck,largerthanfivewool-packs;andanother,withacoupleofwoodenlegs,eachabouttwentyfeethigh.Butthemosthatefulsightofall,wasthelicecrawlingontheirclothes.Icouldseedistinctlythelimbsoftheseverminwithmynakedeye,muchbetterthanthoseofaEuropeanlousethroughamicroscope,andtheirsnoutswithwhichtheyrootedlikeswine.TheywerethefirstIhadeverbeheld,andIshouldhavebeencuriousenoughtodissectoneofthem,ifIhadhadproperinstruments,whichIunluckilyleftbehindmeintheship,although,indeed,thesightwassonauseous,thatitperfectlyturnedmystomach.

           BesidesthelargeboxinwhichIwasusuallycarried,thequeenorderedasmalleronetobemadeforme,ofabouttwelvefeetsquare,andtenhigh,fortheconvenienceoftravelling;becausetheotherwassomewhattoolargeforGlumdalclitch’slap,andcumbersomeinthecoach;itwasmadebythesameartist,whomIdirectedinthewholecontrivance.Thistravelling-closetwasanexactsquare,withawindowinthemiddleofthreeofthesquares,andeachwindowwaslatticedwithironwireontheoutside,topreventaccidentsinlongjourneys.Onthefourthside,whichhadnowindow,twostrongstapleswerefixed,throughwhichthepersonthatcarriedme,whenIhadamindtobeonhorseback,putaleathernbelt,andbuckleditabouthiswaist.Thiswasalwaystheofficeofsomegravetrustyservant,inwhomIcouldconfide,whetherIattendedthekingandqueenintheirprogresses,orweredisposedtoseethegardens,orpayavisittosomegreatladyorministerofstateinthecourt,whenGlumdalclitchhappenedtobeoutoforder;
