           ShewasalittlesurprisedthathecouldspendsomanyhourswithMissCrawford,andnotseemoreofthesortoffaultwhichhehadalreadyobserved,andofwhichshewasalmostalwaysremindedbyasomethingofthesamenaturewhenevershewasinhercompany;butsoitwas.EdmundwasfondofspeakingtoherofMissCrawford,butheseemedtothinkitenoughthattheAdmiralhadsincebeenspared;andshescrupledtopointoutherownremarkstohim,lestitshouldappearlikeill-nature.ThefirstactualpainwhichMissCrawfordoccasionedherwastheconsequenceofaninclinationtolearntoride,whichtheformercaught,soonafterherbeingsettledatMansfield,fromtheexampleoftheyoungladiesatthePark,andwhich,whenEdmund’sacquaintancewithherincreased,ledtohisencouragingthewish,andtheofferofhisownquietmareforthepurposeofherfirstattempts,asthebestfittedforabeginnerthateitherstablecouldfurnish.Nopain,noinjury,however,wasdesignedbyhimtohiscousininthisoffer:shewasnottoloseaday’sexercisebyit.ThemarewasonlytobetakendowntotheParsonagehalfanhourbeforeherrideweretobegin;andFanny,onitsbeingfirstproposed,sofarfromfeelingslighted,wasalmostover-poweredwithgratitudethatheshouldbeaskingherleaveforit.

           MissCrawfordmadeherfirstessaywithgreatcredittoherself,andnoinconveniencetoFanny.
