           Sickofambitiousandmercenaryconnexions,prizingmoreandmorethesterlinggoodofprincipleandtemper,andchieflyanxioustobindbythestrongestsecuritiesallthatremainedtohimofdomesticfelicity,hehadponderedwithgenuinesatisfactiononthemorethanpossibilityofthetwoyoungfriendsfindingtheirnaturalconsolationineachotherforallthathadoccurredofdisappointmenttoeither;andthejoyfulconsentwhichmetEdmund’sapplication,thehighsenseofhavingrealisedagreatacquisitioninthepromiseofFannyforadaughter,formedjustsuchacontrastwithhisearlyopiniononthesubjectwhenthepoorlittlegirl’scominghadbeenfirstagitated,astimeisforeverproducingbetweentheplansanddecisionsofmortals,fortheirowninstruction,andtheirneighbours’entertainment.
