           Norrisbyitsreverseinhimself;clearlysawthathehadbutincreasedtheevilbyteachingthemtorepresstheirspiritsinhispresencesoastomaketheirrealdispositionunknowntohim,andsendingthemforalltheirindulgencestoapersonwhohadbeenabletoattachthemonlybytheblindnessofheraffection,andtheexcessofherpraise.

           Herehadbeengrievousmismanagement;but,badasitwas,hegraduallygrewtofeelthatithadnotbeenthemostdirefulmistakeinhisplanofeducation.Somethingmusthavebeenwantingwithin,ortimewouldhavewornawaymuchofitsilleffect.Hefearedthatprinciple,activeprinciple,hadbeenwanting;thattheyhadneverbeenproperlytaughttogoverntheirinclinationsandtempersbythatsenseofdutywhichcanalonesuffice.Theyhadbeeninstructedtheoreticallyintheirreligion,butneverrequiredtobringitintodailypractice.Tobedistinguishedforeleganceandaccomplishments,theauthorisedobjectoftheiryouth,couldhavehadnousefulinfluencethatway,nomoraleffectonthemind.Hehadmeantthemtobegood,buthiscareshadbeendirectedtotheunderstandingandmanners,notthedisposition;andofthenecessityofself-denialandhumility,hefearedtheyhadneverheardfromanylipsthatcouldprofitthem.

           Bitterlydidhedeploreadeficiencywhichnowhecouldscarcelycomprehendtohavebeenpossible.Wretchedlydidhefeel,thatwithallthecostandcareofananxiousandexpensiveeducation,hehadbroughtuphisdaughterswithouttheirunderstandingtheirfirstduties,orhisbeingacquaintedwiththeircharacterandtemper.
