           Shewasmistaken,however,insupposingthatEdmundgavehisfathernopresentpain.Itwasofamuchlesspoignantnaturethanwhattheothersexcited;butSirThomaswasconsideringhishappinessasverydeeplyinvolvedintheoffenceofhissisterandfriend;cutoffbyit,ashemustbe,fromthewomanwhomhehadbeenpursuingwithundoubtedattachmentandstrongprobabilityofsuccess;andwho,ineverythingbutthisdespicablebrother,wouldhavebeensoeligibleaconnexion.HewasawareofwhatEdmundmustbesufferingonhisownbehalf,inadditiontoalltherest,whentheywereintown:hehadseenorconjecturedhisfeelings;and,havingreasontothinkthatoneinterviewwithMissCrawfordhadtakenplace,fromwhichEdmundderivedonlyincreaseddistress,hadbeenasanxiousonthataccountasonotherstogethimoutoftown,andhadengagedhimintakingFannyhometoheraunt,withaviewtohisreliefandbenefit,nolessthantheirs.Fannywasnotinthesecretofheruncle’sfeelings,SirThomasnotinthesecretofMissCrawford’scharacter.Hadhebeenprivytoherconversationwithhisson,hewouldnothavewishedhertobelongtohim,thoughhertwentythousandpoundshadbeenforty.

           ThatEdmundmustbeforeverdividedfromMissCrawforddidnotadmitofadoubtwithFanny;andyet,tillsheknewthathefeltthesame,herownconvictionwasinsufficient.Shethoughthedid,butshewantedtobeassuredofit.
