TheMissBertrams’admirationofMr.CrawfordwasmorerapturousthananythingwhichMissCrawford’shabitsmadeherlikelytofeel.Sheacknowledged,however,thattheMr.Bertramswereveryfineyoungmen,thattwosuchyoungmenwerenotoftenseentogethereveninLondon,andthattheirmanners,particularlythoseoftheeldest,wereverygood.HehadbeenmuchinLondon,andhadmorelivelinessandgallantrythanEdmund,andmust,therefore,bepreferred;and,indeed,hisbeingtheeldestwasanotherstrongclaim.Shehadfeltanearlypresentimentthatsheshouldliketheeldestbest.Sheknewitwasherway.
TomBertrammusthavebeenthoughtpleasant,indeed,atanyrate;hewasthesortofyoungmantobegenerallyliked,hisagreeablenesswasofthekindtobeoftenerfoundagreeablethansomeendowmentsofahigherstamp,forhehadeasymanners,excellentspirits,alargeacquaintance,andagreatdealtosay;andthereversionofMansfieldPark,andabaronetcy,didnoharmtoallthis.MissCrawfordsoonfeltthatheandhissituationmightdo.
