           IdaresayIwasnotreasonableincarryingwithmehopesofanintercourseatalllikethatofMansfield.Itwashermanner,however,ratherthananyunfrequencyofmeeting.HadshebeendifferentwhenIdidseeher,Ishouldhavemadenocomplaint,butfromtheveryfirstshewasaltered:myfirstreceptionwassounlikewhatIhadhoped,thatIhadalmostresolvedonleavingLondonagaindirectly.Ineednotparticularise.Youknowtheweaksideofhercharacter,andmayimaginethesentimentsandexpressionswhichweretorturingme.Shewasinhighspirits,andsurroundedbythosewhoweregivingallthesupportoftheirownbadsensetohertoolivelymind.IdonotlikeMrs.Fraser.Sheisacold-hearted,vainwoman,whohasmarriedentirelyfromconvenience,andthoughevidentlyunhappyinhermarriage,placesherdisappointmentnottofaultsofjudgment,ortemper,ordisproportionofage,buttoherbeing,afterall,lessaffluentthanmanyofheracquaintance,especiallythanhersister,LadyStornaway,andisthedeterminedsupporterofeverythingmercenaryandambitious,provideditbeonlymercenaryandambitiousenough.Ilookuponherintimacywiththosetwosistersasthegreatestmisfortuneofherlifeandmine.Theyhavebeenleadingherastrayforyears.Couldshebedetachedfromthem!—andsometimesIdonotdespairofit,fortheaffectionappearstomeprincipallyontheirside.Theyareveryfondofher;butIamsureshedoesnotlovethemasshelovesyou.
