           ForFanny,somewhatmorewasrelatedthantheaccidentalagreeablenessofthepartieshehadbeenin.Forherapprobation,theparticularreasonofhisgoingintoNorfolkatall,atthisunusualtimeofyear,wasgiven.Ithadbeenrealbusiness,relativetotherenewalofaleaseinwhichthewelfareofalargeand—hebelieved—industriousfamilywasatstake.Hehadsuspectedhisagentofsomeunderhanddealing;ofmeaningtobiashimagainstthedeserving;andhehaddeterminedtogohimself,andthoroughlyinvestigatethemeritsofthecase.Hehadgone,haddoneevenmoregoodthanhehadforeseen,hadbeenusefultomorethanhisfirstplanhadcomprehended,andwasnowabletocongratulatehimselfuponit,andtofeelthatinperformingaduty,hehadsecuredagreeablerecollectionsforhisownmind.Hehadintroducedhimselftosometenantswhomhehadneverseenbefore;hehadbegunmakingacquaintancewithcottageswhoseveryexistence,thoughonhisownestate,hadbeenhithertounknowntohim.Thiswasaimed,andwellaimed,atFanny.Itwaspleasingtohearhimspeaksoproperly;herehehadbeenactingasheoughttodo.Tobethefriendofthepoorandtheoppressed!Nothingcouldbemoregratefultoher;andshewasonthepointofgivinghimanapprovinglook,whenitwasallfrightenedoffbyhisaddingasomethingtoopointedofhishopingsoontohaveanassistant,afriend,aguideineveryplanofutilityorcharityforEveringham:asomebodythatwouldmakeEveringhamandallaboutitadearerobjectthanithadeverbeenyet.
