           Hertemperwasopen.Sheacknowledgedherfears,blamedherselfforhavingcontendedsowarmly;andfromthathourFanny,understandingtheworthofherdispositionandperceivinghowfullyshewasinclinedtoseekhergoodopinionandrefertoherjudgment,begantofeelagaintheblessingofaffection,andtoentertainthehopeofbeingusefultoamindsomuchinneedofhelp,andsomuchdeservingit.Shegaveadvice,advicetoosoundtoberesistedbyagoodunderstanding,andgivensomildlyandconsideratelyasnottoirritateanimperfecttemper,andshehadthehappinessofobservingitsgoodeffectsnotunfrequently.Morewasnotexpectedbyonewho,whileseeingalltheobligationandexpediencyofsubmissionandforbearance,sawalsowithsympatheticacutenessoffeelingallthatmustbehourlygratingtoagirllikeSusan.Hergreatestwonderonthesubjectsoonbecame—notthatSusanshouldhavebeenprovokedintodisrespectandimpatienceagainstherbetterknowledge—butthatsomuchbetterknowledge,somanygoodnotionsshouldhavebeenhersatall;andthat,broughtupinthemidstofnegligenceanderror,sheshouldhaveformedsuchproperopinionsofwhatoughttobe;she,whohadhadnocousinEdmundtodirectherthoughtsorfixherprinciples.

           Theintimacythusbegunbetweenthemwasamaterialadvantagetoeach.Bysittingtogetherupstairs,theyavoidedagreatdealofthedisturbanceofthehouse;Fannyhadpeace,andSusanlearnedtothinkitnomisfortunetobequietlyemployed.
