           Susantriedtobeuseful,whereshecouldonlyhavegoneawayandcried;andthatSusanwasusefulshecouldperceive;thatthings,badastheywere,wouldhavebeenworsebutforsuchinterposition,andthatbothhermotherandBetseywererestrainedfromsomeexcessesofveryoffensiveindulgenceandvulgarity.

           Ineveryargumentwithhermother,Susanhadinpointofreasontheadvantage,andneverwasthereanymaternaltendernesstobuyheroff.Theblindfondnesswhichwasforeverproducingevilaroundhershehadneverknown.Therewasnogratitudeforaffectionpastorpresenttomakeherbetterbearwithitsexcessestotheothers.

           Allthisbecamegraduallyevident,andgraduallyplacedSusanbeforehersisterasanobjectofmingledcompassionandrespect.Thathermannerwaswrong,however,attimesverywrong,hermeasuresoftenill-chosenandill-timed,andherlooksandlanguageveryoftenindefensible,Fannycouldnotceasetofeel;butshebegantohopetheymightberectified.Susan,shefound,lookeduptoherandwishedforhergoodopinion;andnewasanythinglikeanofficeofauthoritywastoFanny,newasitwastoimagineherselfcapableofguidingorinforminganyone,shedidresolvetogiveoccasionalhintstoSusan,andendeavourtoexerciseforheradvantagethejusternotionsofwhatwasduetoeverybody,andwhatwouldbewisestforherself,whichherownmorefavourededucationhadfixedinher.

           Herinfluence,oratleasttheconsciousnessanduseofit,originatedinanactofkindnessbySusan,which,aftermanyhesitationsofdelicacy,sheatlastworkedherselfupto.
