           Sam,loudandoverbearingashewas,sheratherregrettedwhenhewent,forhewascleverandintelligent,andgladtobeemployedinanyerrandinthetown;andthoughspurningtheremonstrancesofSusan,givenastheywere,thoughveryreasonableinthemselves,withill-timedandpowerlesswarmth,wasbeginningtobeinfluencedbyFanny’sservicesandgentlepersuasions;andshefoundthatthebestofthethreeyoungeroneswasgoneinhim:TomandCharlesbeingatleastasmanyyearsastheywerehisjuniorsdistantfromthatageoffeelingandreason,whichmightsuggesttheexpediencyofmakingfriends,andofendeavouringtobelessdisagreeable.Theirsistersoondespairedofmakingthesmallestimpressiononthem;theywerequiteuntameablebyanymeansofaddresswhichshehadspiritsortimetoattempt.Everyafternoonbroughtareturnoftheirriotousgamesalloverthehouse;andsheveryearlylearnedtosighattheapproachofSaturday’sconstanthalf-holiday.

           Betsey,too,aspoiledchild,traineduptothinkthealphabethergreatestenemy,lefttobewiththeservantsatherpleasure,andthenencouragedtoreportanyevilofthem,shewasalmostasreadytodespairofbeingabletoloveorassist;andofSusan’stempershehadmanydoubts.Hercontinualdisagreementswithhermother,herrashsquabbleswithTomandCharles,andpetulancewithBetsey,wereatleastsodistressingtoFannythat,thoughadmittingtheywerebynomeanswithoutprovocation,shefearedthedispositionthatcouldpushthemtosuchlengthmustbefarfromamiable,andfromaffordinganyreposetoherself.
