           TheBertramswereallforgottenindetailingthefaultsofRebecca,againstwhomSusanhadalsomuchtodepose,andlittleBetseyagreatdealmore,andwhodidseemsothoroughlywithoutasinglerecommendation,thatFannycouldnothelpmodestlypresumingthathermothermeanttopartwithherwhenheryearwasup.

           “Heryear!”criedMrs.Price;“IamsureIhopeIshallberidofherbeforeshehasstaidayear,forthatwillnotbeuptillNovember.Servantsarecometosuchapass,mydear,inPortsmouth,thatitisquiteamiracleifonekeepsthemmorethanhalfayear.Ihavenohopeofeverbeingsettled;andifIwastopartwithRebecca,Ishouldonlygetsomethingworse.AndyetIdonotthinkIamaverydifficultmistresstoplease;andIamsuretheplaceiseasyenough,forthereisalwaysagirlunderher,andIoftendohalftheworkmyself.”

           Fannywassilent;butnotfrombeingconvincedthattheremightnotbearemedyfoundforsomeoftheseevils.AsshenowsatlookingatBetsey,shecouldnotbutthinkparticularlyofanothersister,averyprettylittlegirl,whomshehadlefttherenotmuchyoungerwhenshewentintoNorthamptonshire,whohaddiedafewyearsafterwards.Therehadbeensomethingremarkablyamiableabouther.FannyinthoseearlydayshadpreferredhertoSusan;andwhenthenewsofherdeathhadatlastreachedMansfield,hadforashorttimebeenquiteafflicted.ThesightofBetseybroughttheimageoflittleMarybackagain,butshewouldnothavepainedhermotherbyalludingtoherfortheworld.
