           ThenextstepwastocommunicatewithPortsmouth.Fannywrotetoofferherself;andhermother’sanswer,thoughshort,wassokind—afewsimplelinesexpressedsonaturalandmotherlyajoyintheprospectofseeingherchildagain,astoconfirmallthedaughter’sviewsofhappinessinbeingwithher—convincingherthatsheshouldnowfindawarmandaffectionatefriendinthe“mama”whohadcertainlyshewnnoremarkablefondnessforherformerly;butthisshecouldeasilysupposetohavebeenherownfaultorherownfancy.Shehadprobablyalienatedlovebythehelplessnessandfretfulnessofafearfultemper,orbeenunreasonableinwantingalargersharethananyoneamongsomanycoulddeserve.Now,whensheknewbetterhowtobeuseful,andhowtoforbear,andwhenhermothercouldbenolongeroccupiedbytheincessantdemandsofahousefulloflittlechildren,therewouldbeleisureandinclinationforeverycomfort,andtheyshouldsoonbewhatmotheranddaughteroughttobetoeachother.

           Williamwasalmostashappyintheplanashissister.Itwouldbethegreatestpleasuretohimtohavehertheretothelastmomentbeforehesailed,andperhapsfindhertherestillwhenhecameinfromhisfirstcruise.Andbesides,hewantedhersoverymuchtoseetheThrushbeforeshewentoutofharbour—theThrushwascertainlythefinestsloopintheservice—andtherewereseveralimprovementsinthedockyard,too,whichhequitelongedtoshewher.
