           IfshecouldhavebelievedMary’sfuturefateasunconnectedwithMansfieldasshewasdeterminedthebrother’sshouldbe,ifshecouldhavehopedherreturnthithertobeasdistantasshewasmuchinclinedtothinkhis,shewouldhavebeenlightofheartindeed;butthemoresherecollectedandobserved,themoredeeplywassheconvincedthateverythingwasnowinafairertrainforMissCrawford’smarryingEdmundthanithadeverbeenbefore.Onhissidetheinclinationwasstronger,onherslessequivocal.Hisobjections,thescruplesofhisintegrity,seemedalldoneaway,nobodycouldtellhow;andthedoubtsandhesitationsofherambitionwereequallygotover—andequallywithoutapparentreason.Itcouldonlybeimputedtoincreasingattachment.Hisgoodandherbadfeelingsyieldedtolove,andsuchlovemustunitethem.HewastogototownassoonassomebusinessrelativetoThorntonLaceywerecompleted—perhapswithinafortnight;hetalkedofgoing,helovedtotalkofit;andwhenoncewithheragain,Fannycouldnotdoubttherest.Heracceptancemustbeascertainashisoffer;andyettherewerebadfeelingsstillremainingwhichmadetheprospectofitmostsorrowfultoher,independently,shebelieved,independentlyofself.

           Intheirverylastconversation,MissCrawford,inspiteofsomeamiablesensations,andmuchpersonalkindness,hadstillbeenMissCrawford;stillshewnamindledastrayandbewildered,andwithoutanysuspicionofbeingso;darkened,yetfancyingitselflight.Shemightlove,butshedidnotdeserveEdmundbyanyothersentiment.
