           Herdispleasure,herpenetration,andherhappinesswereallfearfultoencounter;andthedependenceofhavingotherspresentwhentheymetwasFanny’sonlysupportinlookingforwardtoit.SheabsentedherselfaslittleaspossiblefromLadyBertram,keptawayfromtheEastroom,andtooknosolitarywalkintheshrubbery,inhercautiontoavoidanysuddenattack.

           Shesucceeded.Shewassafeinthebreakfast-room,withheraunt,whenMissCrawforddidcome;andthefirstmiseryover,andMissCrawfordlookingandspeakingwithmuchlessparticularityofexpressionthanshehadanticipated,Fannybegantohopetherewouldbenothingworsetobeenduredthanahalf-hourofmoderateagitation.Buthereshehopedtoomuch;MissCrawfordwasnottheslaveofopportunity.ShewasdeterminedtoseeFannyalone,andthereforesaidtohertolerablysoon,inalowvoice,“Imustspeaktoyouforafewminutessomewhere”;wordsthatFannyfeltalloverher,inallherpulsesandallhernerves.Denialwasimpossible.Herhabitsofreadysubmission,onthecontrary,madeheralmostinstantlyriseandleadthewayoutoftheroom.Shediditwithwretchedfeelings,butitwasinevitable.

           TheywerenosoonerinthehallthanallrestraintofcountenancewasoveronMissCrawford’sside.SheimmediatelyshookherheadatFannywitharch,yetaffectionatereproach,andtakingherhand,seemedhardlyabletohelpbeginningdirectly.
