           Edmundsawwearinessanddistressinherface,andimmediatelyresolvedtoforbearallfartherdiscussion;andnoteventomentionthenameofCrawfordagain,exceptasitmightbeconnectedwithwhatmustbeagreeabletoher.Onthisprinciple,hesoonafterwardsobserved—“TheygoonMonday.Youaresure,therefore,ofseeingyourfriendeitherto-morroworSunday.TheyreallygoonMonday;andIwaswithinatrifleofbeingpersuadedtostayatLessingbytillthatveryday!Ihadalmostpromisedit.Whatadifferenceitmighthavemade!ThosefiveorsixdaysmoreatLessingbymighthavebeenfeltallmylife.”

           “Youwerenearstayingthere?”

           “Very.Iwasmostkindlypressed,andhadnearlyconsented.HadIreceivedanyletterfromMansfield,totellmehowyouwereallgoingon,IbelieveIshouldcertainlyhavestaid;butIknewnothingthathadhappenedhereforafortnight,andfeltthatIhadbeenawaylongenough.”

           “Youspentyourtimepleasantlythere?”

           “Yes;thatis,itwasthefaultofmyownmindifIdidnot.Theywereallverypleasant.Idoubttheirfindingmeso.Itookuneasinesswithme,andtherewasnogettingridofittillIwasinMansfieldagain.”

           “TheMissOwens—youlikedthem,didnotyou?”

           “Yes,verywell.Pleasant,good-humoured,unaffectedgirls
