           “Wearesototallyunlike,”saidFanny,avoidingadirectanswer,“wearesovery,verydifferentinallourinclinationsandways,thatIconsideritasquiteimpossibleweshouldeverbetolerablyhappytogether,evenifIcouldlikehim.Thereneverweretwopeoplemoredissimilar.Wehavenotonetasteincommon.Weshouldbemiserable.”

           “Youaremistaken,Fanny.Thedissimilarityisnotsostrong.Youarequiteenoughalike.Youhavetastesincommon.Youhavemoralandliterarytastesincommon.Youhavebothwarmheartsandbenevolentfeelings;and,Fanny,whothatheardhimread,andsawyoulistentoShakespearetheothernight,willthinkyouunfittedascompanions?Youforgetyourself:thereisadecideddifferenceinyourtempers,Iallow.Heislively,youareserious;butsomuchthebetter:hisspiritswillsupportyours.Itisyourdispositiontobeeasilydejectedandtofancydifficultiesgreaterthantheyare.Hischeerfulnesswillcounteractthis.Heseesdifficultiesnowhere:andhispleasantnessandgaietywillbeaconstantsupporttoyou.Yourbeingsofarunlike,Fanny,doesnotinthesmallestdegreemakeagainsttheprobabilityofyourhappinesstogether:donotimagineit.Iammyselfconvincedthatitisratherafavourablecircumstance.
