           Afterdinner,whenheandhisfatherwerealone,hehadFanny’shistory;andthenallthegreateventsofthelastfortnight,andthepresentsituationofmattersatMansfieldwereknowntohim.

           Fannysuspectedwhatwasgoingon.Theysatsomuchlongerthanusualinthedining-parlour,thatshewassuretheymustbetalkingofher;andwhenteaatlastbroughtthemaway,andshewastobeseenbyEdmundagain,shefeltdreadfullyguilty.Hecametoher,satdownbyher,tookherhand,andpresseditkindly;andatthatmomentshethoughtthat,butfortheoccupationandthescenewhichthetea-thingsafforded,shemusthavebetrayedheremotioninsomeunpardonableexcess.

           Hewasnotintending,however,bysuchaction,tobeconveyingtoherthatunqualifiedapprobationandencouragementwhichherhopesdrewfromit.Itwasdesignedonlytoexpresshisparticipationinallthatinterestedher,andtotellherthathehadbeenhearingwhatquickenedeveryfeelingofaffection.Hewas,infact,entirelyonhisfather’ssideofthequestion.Hissurprisewasnotsogreatashisfather’satherrefusingCrawford,because,sofarfromsupposinghertoconsiderhimwithanythinglikeapreference,hehadalwaysbelievedittoberatherthereverse,andcouldimaginehertobetakenperfectlyunprepared,butSirThomascouldnotregardtheconnexionasmoredesirablethanhedid.
