           Therewasalook,astart,anexclamationonhearingthis,whichastonishedSirThomas;butwhatwashisincreaseofastonishmentonhearingherexclaim—“Oh!no,sir,Icannot,indeedIcannotgodowntohim.Mr.Crawfordoughttoknow—hemustknowthat:Itoldhimenoughyesterdaytoconvincehim;hespoketomeonthissubjectyesterday,andItoldhimwithoutdisguisethatitwasverydisagreeabletome,andquiteoutofmypowertoreturnhisgoodopinion.”

           “Idonotcatchyourmeaning,”saidSirThomas,sittingdownagain.“Outofyourpowertoreturnhisgoodopinion?Whatisallthis?Iknowhespoketoyouyesterday,and(asfarasIunderstand)receivedasmuchencouragementtoproceedasawell-judgingyoungwomancouldpermitherselftogive.
