           SirThomasfounditexpedienttogotoAntiguahimself,forthebetterarrangementofhisaffairs,andhetookhiseldestsonwithhim,inthehopeofdetachinghimfromsomebadconnexionsathome.TheyleftEnglandwiththeprobabilityofbeingnearlyatwelvemonthabsent.

           Thenecessityofthemeasureinapecuniarylight,andthehopeofitsutilitytohisson,reconciledSirThomastotheeffortofquittingtherestofhisfamily,andofleavinghisdaughterstothedirectionofothersattheirpresentmostinterestingtimeoflife.HecouldnotthinkLadyBertramquiteequaltosupplyhisplacewiththem,orrather,toperformwhatshouldhavebeenherown;but,inMrs.Norris’swatchfulattention,andinEdmund’sjudgment,hehadsufficientconfidencetomakehimgowithoutfearsfortheirconduct.

           LadyBertramdidnotatallliketohaveherhusbandleaveher;butshewasnotdisturbedbyanyalarmforhissafety,orsolicitudeforhiscomfort,beingoneofthosepersonswhothinknothingcanbedangerous,ordifficult,orfatiguingtoanybodybutthemselves.

           TheMissBertramsweremuchtobepitiedontheoccasion:notfortheirsorrow,butfortheirwantofit.Theirfatherwasnoobjectoflovetothem;hehadneverseemedthefriendoftheirpleasures,andhisabsencewasunhappilymostwelcome.Theywererelievedbyitfromallrestraint;andwithoutaimingatonegratificationthatwouldprobablyhavebeenforbiddenbySirThomas,theyfeltthemselvesimmediatelyattheirowndisposal,andtohaveeveryindulgencewithintheirreach
