           Crawfordspoketoher,andhespoketohermuchtoooften;andshewasafraidtherewasasomethinginhisvoiceandmannerinaddressingherverydifferentfromwhattheywerewhenhetalkedtotheothers.Hercomfortinthatday’sdinnerwasquitedestroyed:shecouldhardlyeatanything;andwhenSirThomasgood-humouredlyobservedthatjoyhadtakenawayherappetite,shewasreadytosinkwithshame,fromthedreadofMr.Crawford’sinterpretation;forthoughnothingcouldhavetemptedhertoturnhereyestotherighthand,wherehesat,shefeltthathiswereimmediatelydirectedtowardsher.

           Shewasmoresilentthanever.ShewouldhardlyjoinevenwhenWilliamwasthesubject,forhiscommissioncameallfromtherighthandtoo,andtherewaspainintheconnexion.

           ShethoughtLadyBertramsatlongerthanever,andbegantobeindespairofevergettingaway;butatlasttheywereinthedrawing-room,andshewasabletothinkasshewould,whileherauntsfinishedthesubjectofWilliam’sappointmentintheirownstyle.
