           Theirhomesweresodistant,andthecirclesinwhichtheymovedsodistinct,asalmosttoprecludethemeansofeverhearingofeachother’sexistenceduringtheelevenfollowingyears,or,atleast,tomakeitverywonderfultoSirThomasthatMrs.Norrisshouldeverhaveitinherpowertotellthem,asshenowandthendid,inanangryvoice,thatFannyhadgotanotherchild.Bytheendofelevenyears,however,Mrs.Pricecouldnolongeraffordtocherishprideorresentment,ortoloseoneconnexionthatmightpossiblyassisther.Alargeandstillincreasingfamily,anhusbanddisabledforactiveservice,butnotthelessequaltocompanyandgoodliquor,andaverysmallincometosupplytheirwants,madehereagertoregainthefriendsshehadsocarelesslysacrificed;andsheaddressedLadyBertraminaletterwhichspokesomuchcontritionanddespondence,suchasuperfluityofchildren,andsuchawantofalmosteverythingelse,ascouldnotbutdisposethemalltoareconciliation.Shewaspreparingforherninthlying-in;andafterbewailingthecircumstance,andimploringtheircountenanceassponsorstotheexpectedchild,shecouldnotconcealhowimportantshefelttheymightbetothefuturemaintenanceoftheeightalreadyinbeing.
