           Once,andonceonly,inthecourseofmanyyears,hadshethehappinessofbeingwithWilliam.Oftherestshesawnothing:nobodyseemedtothinkofherevergoingamongstthemagain,evenforavisit,nobodyathomeseemedtowanther;butWilliamdetermining,soonafterherremoval,tobeasailor,wasinvitedtospendaweekwithhissisterinNorthamptonshirebeforehewenttosea.Theireageraffectioninmeeting,theirexquisitedelightinbeingtogether,theirhoursofhappymirth,andmomentsofseriousconference,maybeimagined;aswellasthesanguineviewsandspiritsoftheboyeventothelast,andthemiseryofthegirlwhenhelefther.LuckilythevisithappenedintheChristmasholidays,whenshecoulddirectlylookforcomforttohercousinEdmund;andhetoldhersuchcharmingthingsofwhatWilliamwastodo,andbehereafter,inconsequenceofhisprofession,asmadehergraduallyadmitthattheseparationmighthavesomeuse.Edmund’sfriendshipneverfailedher:hisleavingEtonforOxfordmadenochangeinhiskinddispositions,andonlyaffordedmorefrequentopportunitiesofprovingthem.Withoutanydisplayofdoingmorethantherest,oranyfearofdoingtoomuch,hewasalwaystruetoherinterests,andconsiderateofherfeelings,tryingtomakehergoodqualitiesunderstood,andtoconquerthediffidencewhichpreventedtheirbeingmoreapparent;givingheradvice,consolation,andencouragement
