           Therewasoneperson,however,inthehouse,whomhecouldnotleavetolearnhissentimentsmerelythroughhisconduct.HecouldnothelpgivingMrs.Norrisahintofhishavinghopedthatheradvicemighthavebeeninterposedtopreventwhatherjudgmentmustcertainlyhavedisapproved.Theyoungpeoplehadbeenveryinconsiderateinformingtheplan;theyoughttohavebeencapableofabetterdecisionthemselves;buttheywereyoung;and,exceptingEdmund,hebelieved,ofunsteadycharacters;andwithgreatersurprise,therefore,hemustregardheracquiescenceintheirwrongmeasures,hercountenanceoftheirunsafeamusements,thanthatsuchmeasuresandsuchamusementsshouldhavebeensuggested.Mrs.Norriswasalittleconfoundedandasnearlybeingsilencedasevershehadbeeninherlife;forshewasashamedtoconfesshavingneverseenanyoftheimproprietywhichwassoglaringtoSirThomas,andwouldnothaveadmittedthatherinfluencewasinsufficient—thatshemighthavetalkedinvain.Heronlyresourcewastogetoutofthesubjectasfastaspossible,andturnthecurrentofSirThomas’sideasintoahappierchannel.Shehadagreatdealtoinsinuateinherownpraiseastogeneralattentiontotheinterestandcomfortofhisfamily,muchexertionandmanysacrificestoglanceatintheformofhurriedwalksandsuddenremovalsfromherownfireside,andmanyexcellenthintsofdistrustandeconomytoLadyBertramandEdmundtodetail,wherebyamostconsiderablesavinghadalwaysarisen,andmorethanonebadservantbeendetected.ButherchiefstrengthlayinSotherton.
