Hesteppedtothedoor,rejoicingatthatmomentinhavingthemeansofimmediatecommunication,and,openingit,foundhimselfonthestageofatheatre,andopposedtoarantingyoungman,whoappearedlikelytoknockhimdownbackwards.AttheverymomentofYatesperceivingSirThomas,andgivingperhapstheverybeststarthehadevergiveninthewholecourseofhisrehearsals,TomBertramenteredattheotherendoftheroom;andneverhadhefoundgreaterdifficultyinkeepinghiscountenance.Hisfather’slooksofsolemnityandamazementonthishisfirstappearanceonanystage,andthegradualmetamorphosisoftheimpassionedBaronWildenheimintothewell-bredandeasyMr.Yates,makinghisbowandapologytoSirThomasBertram,wassuchanexhibition,suchapieceoftrueacting,ashewouldnothavelostuponanyaccount.Itwouldbethelast—inallprobability—thelastsceneonthatstage;buthewassuretherecouldnotbeafiner.Thehousewouldclosewiththegreatesteclat.
Therewaslittletime,however,fortheindulgenceofanyimagesofmerriment.Itwasnecessaryforhimtostepforward,too,andassisttheintroduction,andwithmanyawkwardsensationshedidhisbest.SirThomasreceivedMr.Yateswithalltheappearanceofcordialitywhichwasduetohisowncharacter,butwasreallyasfarfrompleasedwiththenecessityoftheacquaintanceaswiththemannerofitscommencement.Mr.
