           Fannytooktheworkveryquietly,withoutattemptinganydefence;butherkinderauntBertramobservedonherbehalf—

           “Onecannotwonder,sister,thatFannyshouldbedelighted:itisallnewtoher,youknow;youandIusedtobeveryfondofaplayourselves,andsoamIstill;andassoonasIamalittlemoreatleisure,Imeantolookinattheirrehearsalstoo.Whatistheplayabout,Fanny?youhavenevertoldme.”

           “Oh!sister,praydonotaskhernow;forFannyisnotoneofthosewhocantalkandworkatthesametime.ItisaboutLovers’Vows.”

           “Ibelieve,”saidFannytoherauntBertram,“therewillbethreeactsrehearsedto-morrowevening,andthatwillgiveyouanopportunityofseeingalltheactorsatonce.”

           “Youhadbetterstaytillthecurtainishung,”interposedMrs.Norris;“thecurtainwillbehunginadayortwo—thereisverylittlesenseinaplaywithoutacurtain—andIammuchmistakenifyoudonotfinditdrawupintoveryhandsomefestoons.”

           LadyBertramseemedquiteresignedtowaiting.Fannydidnotshareheraunt’scomposure:shethoughtofthemorrowagreatdeal,forifthethreeactswererehearsed,EdmundandMissCrawfordwouldthenbeactingtogetherforthefirsttime;thethirdactwouldbringascenebetweenthemwhichinterestedhermostparticularly,andwhichshewaslonginganddreadingtoseehowtheywouldperform.Thewholesubjectofitwaslove—amarriageoflovewastobedescribedbythegentleman,andverylittleshortofadeclarationoflovebemadebythelady.
