           Shewasfullofjealousyandagitation.MissCrawfordcamewithlooksofgaietywhichseemedaninsult,withfriendlyexpressionstowardsherselfwhichshecouldhardlyanswercalmly.Everybodyaroundherwasgayandbusy,prosperousandimportant;eachhadtheirobjectofinterest,theirpart,theirdress,theirfavouritescene,theirfriendsandconfederates:allwerefindingemploymentinconsultationsandcomparisons,ordiversionintheplayfulconceitstheysuggested.Shealonewassadandinsignificant:shehadnoshareinanything;shemightgoorstay;shemightbeinthemidstoftheirnoise,orretreatfromittothesolitudeoftheEastroom,withoutbeingseenormissed.Shecouldalmostthinkanythingwouldhavebeenpreferabletothis.Mrs.Grantwasofconsequence:hergood-naturehadhonourablemention;hertasteandhertimewereconsidered;herpresencewaswanted;shewassoughtfor,andattended,andpraised;andFannywasatfirstinsomedangerofenvyingherthecharactershehadaccepted.Butreflectionbroughtbetterfeelings,andshewedherthatMrs.Grantwasentitledtorespect,whichcouldneverhavebelongedtoher;andthat,hadshereceivedeventhegreatest,shecouldneverhavebeeneasyinjoiningaschemewhich,consideringonlyheruncle,shemustcondemnaltogether.

           Fanny’sheartwasnotabsolutelytheonlysaddenedoneamongstthem,asshesoonbegantoacknowledgetoherself.Juliawasasufferertoo,thoughnotquitesoblamelessly.
