           “Yes;butwhatcanbedone?Yourbrotherissodetermined.”

           “Thereisbutonethingtobedone,Fanny.ImusttakeAnhaltmyself.IamwellawarethatnothingelsewillquietTom.”

           Fannycouldnotanswerhim.

           “ItisnotatallwhatIlike,”hecontinued.“Nomancanlikebeingdrivenintotheappearanceofsuchinconsistency.Afterbeingknowntoopposetheschemefromthebeginning,thereisabsurdityinthefaceofmyjoiningthemnow,whentheyareexceedingtheirfirstplanineveryrespect;butIcanthinkofnootheralternative.Canyou,Fanny?”

           “No,”saidFannyslowly,“notimmediately,but—”

           “Butwhat?Iseeyourjudgmentisnotwithme.Thinkitalittleover.PerhapsyouarenotsomuchawareasIamofthemischiefthatmay,oftheunpleasantnessthatmustarisefromayoungman’sbeingreceivedinthismanner:domesticatedamongus;authorisedtocomeatallhours,andplacedsuddenlyonafootingwhichmustdoawayallrestraints.
