           Norristhatshewouldbeagoodgirl;invaindidLadyBertramsmileandmakehersitonthesofawithherselfandpug,andvainwaseventhesightofagooseberrytarttowardsgivinghercomfort;shecouldscarcelyswallowtwomouthfulsbeforetearsinterruptedher,andsleepseemingtobeherlikeliestfriend,shewastakentofinishhersorrowsinbed.

           “Thisisnotaverypromisingbeginning,”saidMrs.Norris,whenFannyhadlefttheroom.“AfterallthatIsaidtoheraswecamealong,Ithoughtshewouldhavebehavedbetter;Itoldherhowmuchmightdependuponheracquittingherselfwellatfirst.Iwishtheremaynotbealittlesulkinessoftemper—herpoormotherhadagooddeal;butwemustmakeallowancesforsuchachild—andIdonotknowthatherbeingsorrytoleaveherhomeisreallyagainsther,for,withallitsfaults,itwasherhome,andshecannotasyetunderstandhowmuchshehaschangedforthebetter;butthenthereismoderationinallthings.”

           Itrequiredalongertime,however,thanMrs.Norriswasinclinedtoallow,toreconcileFannytothenoveltyofMansfieldPark,andtheseparationfromeverybodyshehadbeenusedto.Herfeelingswereveryacute,andtoolittleunderstoodtobeproperlyattendedto.Nobodymeanttobeunkind,butnobodyputthemselvesoutoftheirwaytosecurehercomfort.

           TheholidayallowedtotheMissBertramsthenextday,onpurposetoaffordleisureforgettingacquaintedwith,andentertainingtheiryoungcousin,producedlittleunion.
