           Granthadchosen,hewouldhavetakena—notagoodtemperintoit;andashemust,eitherinthenavyorarmy,havehadagreatmanymorepeopleunderhiscommandthanhehasnow,Ithinkmorewouldhavebeenmadeunhappybyhimasasailororsoldierthanasaclergyman.Besides,IcannotbutsupposethatwhatevertheremaybetowishotherwiseinDr.Grantwouldhavebeeninagreaterdangerofbecomingworseinamoreactiveandworldlyprofession,wherehewouldhavehadlesstimeandobligation—wherehemighthaveescapedthatknowledgeofhimself,thefrequency,atleast,ofthatknowledgewhichitisimpossibleheshouldescapeasheisnow.Aman—asensiblemanlikeDr.Grant,cannotbeinthehabitofteachingotherstheirdutyeveryweek,cannotgotochurchtwiceeverySunday,andpreachsuchverygoodsermonsinsogoodamannerashedoes,withoutbeingthebetterforithimself.Itmustmakehimthink;andIhavenodoubtthatheoftenerendeavourstorestrainhimselfthanhewouldifhehadbeenanythingbutaclergyman.”
