           “Everygenerationhasitsimprovements,”saidMissCrawford,withasmile,toEdmund.

           Mrs.RushworthwasgonetorepeatherlessontoMr.Crawford;andEdmund,Fanny,andMissCrawfordremainedinaclustertogether.

           “Itisapity,”criedFanny,“thatthecustomshouldhavebeendiscontinued.Itwasavaluablepartofformertimes.Thereissomethinginachapelandchaplainsomuchincharacterwithagreathouse,withone’sideasofwhatsuchahouseholdshouldbe!Awholefamilyassemblingregularlyforthepurposeofprayerisfine!”

           “Veryfineindeed,”saidMissCrawford,laughing.“Itmustdotheheadsofthefamilyagreatdealofgoodtoforceallthepoorhousemaidsandfootmentoleavebusinessandpleasure,andsaytheirprayersheretwiceaday,whiletheyareinventingexcusesthemselvesforstayingaway.”

           “ThatishardlyFanny’sideaofafamilyassembling,”saidEdmund.“Ifthemasterandmistressdonotattendthemselves,theremustbemoreharmthangoodinthecustom.”

           “Atanyrate,itissafertoleavepeopletotheirowndevicesonsuchsubjects.Everybodylikestogotheirownway—tochusetheirowntimeandmannerofdevotion.
