OnesummerdayClymwasinthegarden,immediatelyoutsidetheparlourwindow,whichwasasusualopen.Hewaslookingatthepot-flowersonthesill;theyhadbeenrevivedandrestoredbyThomasintothestateinwhichhismotherhadleftthem.HeheardaslightscreamfromThomasin,whowassittinginsidetheroom.
“O,howyoufrightenedme!”shesaidtosomeonewhohadentered.“Ithoughtyouweretheghostofyourself.”
Clymwascuriousenoughtoadvancealittlefurtherandlookinatthewindow.TohisastonishmenttherestoodwithintheroomDiggoryVenn,nolongerareddleman,butexhibitingthestrangelyalteredhuesofanordinaryChristiancountenance,whiteshirt-front,lightfloweredwaistcoat,blue-spottedneckerchief,andbottle-greencoat.Nothinginthisappearancewasatallsingularbutthefactofitsgreatdifferencefromwhathehadformerlybeen.
