           Oncomingclose,hefoundtherewerenohorsesattachedtoit,thespotbeingapparentlyquitedeserted.Thewaggon,fromitsposition,seemedtohavebeenleftthereforthenight,forbeyondabouthalfatrussofhaywhichwasheapedinthebottom,itwasquiteempty.Gabrielsatdownontheshaftsofthevehicleandconsideredhisposition.Hecalculatedthathehadwalkedaveryfairproportionofthejourney;andhavingbeenonfootsincedaybreak,hefelttemptedtoliedownuponthehayinthewaggoninsteadofpushingontothevillageofWeatherbury,andhavingtopayforalodging.

           Eatinghislastslicesofbreadandham,anddrinkingfromthebottleofciderhehadtakentheprecautiontobringwithhim,hegotintothelonelywaggon.Herehespreadhalfofthehayasabed,and,aswellashecouldinthedarkness,pulledtheotherhalfoverhimbywayofbed-clothes,coveringhimselfentirely,andfeeling,physically,ascomfortableaseverhehadbeeninhislife.InwardmelancholyitwasimpossibleforamanlikeOak,introspectivefarbeyondhisneighbours,tobanishquite,whilstconningthepresentuntowardpageofhishistory.So,thinkingofhismisfortunes,amorousandpastoral,hefellasleep,shepherdsenjoying,incommonwithsailors,theprivilegeofbeingabletosummonthegodinsteadofhavingtowaitforhim.

           Onsomewhatsuddenlyawaking,afterasleepofwhoselengthhehadnoidea,Oakfoundthatthewaggonwasinmotion.
