Theroadstretchedthroughwater-meadowstraversedbylittlebrooks,whosequiveringsurfaceswerebraidedalongtheircentres,andfoldedintocreasesatthesides;or,wheretheflowwasmorerapid,thestreamwaspiedwithspotsofwhitefroth,whichrodeoninundisturbedserenity.Onthehigherlevelsthedeadanddrycarcassesofleavestappedthegroundastheybowledalonghelter-skelterupontheshouldersofthewind,andlittlebirdsinthehedgeswererustlingtheirfeathersandtuckingthemselvesincomfortablyforthenight,retainingtheirplacesifOakkeptmoving,butflyingawayifhestoppedtolookatthem.HepassedbyYalburyWoodwherethegame-birdswererisingtotheirroosts,andheardthecrack-voicedcock-pheasants"cu-uck,cuck,"andthewheezywhistleofthehens.
Bythetimehehadwalkedthreeorfourmileseveryshapeinthelandscapehadassumedauniformhueofblackness.HedescendedYalburyHillandcouldjustdiscernaheadofhimawaggon,drawnupunderagreatover-hangingtreebytheroadside.
